So the first week of Morocco is almost over! I knew it would go fast, but experiencing how fast is surprising. So, where did I leave off?
Tuesday night a few of us girls went out for ice cream which everyone in the house was bragging about, and all of there brags were for well reason. Michelle and I got two, one on the way to our walk, and one coming home. Banana is by far the best, but don't say banana to an Arabic man because he will make fun of your accent, also making you repeat all of the flavors they have.
That night we just hung out in our room and talked all night, it was really nice.
Yesterday everyone in the house seemed pretty exhausted, everywhere you looked someone was napping, i had my hour of napping myself. Luckily I didn't sleep talk like the last time. After dinner, we watch In Bruges until the DVD started skipping toward the end which was a bummer... those $3 copies...
I have been swearing all week i would be in bed by nine, but it has not occured yet. By the time we all lay down, we are talking to one another or i end up staying on my computer reading later than i intended.
The orphanage is going great! I look forward to going there every day and miss the babies every night. There are two that are my favorites- Zizu and Riyad. Zizu is the happiest, most complacent baby there. Not once have i heard him cry. Everytime I look at him he is just smiling in curiosity to everything around him. When i pick him up his embrace is so tight and warm, all the while still smiling. Riyad is only two months old and so tiny. Today I got him to smile multiple times which made my morning-he had yet to smile until today. I just kept kissing him and he kept smiling. It's hard to leave them at the end of the day! The 6 month olds were all fervently crying and screaming which made our day all the more tiring. There was no placating the babies today. We spent most of the time in their room, giving the nurses a break. The babies just need some lovin. Its plain to see, and i feel so great that there are always going to be new volunteers to give them that attention until adoptive parents come, of which I've seen two in six days so far which seems pretty hopefull.
Tonight-hopefully- i will be in bed by nine because this weekend we leave for Fez! We will take a train there after our placements tomorrow and stay in a hotel, its about a three hour ride. Somehow everything seems reasonable here. If i thought of a three hour car ride back at home, i would dread the idea, but here it seems like no big deal. Saturday we are meeting our guide and going to Fez (The oldest Medina in the world), i hope my bargaining skills are up to par... i hear they have real leather jackets... Sunday we are taking a cab to Meknes to see some ruins, then a train back to Rabat to make it home in time for dinner. So i will need my energy.
Of course, i could sleep if all of the animals in the whole of Rabat did not come sit on our balcony and make all sounds of abnormal, unusual noises as soon as we want to sleep!! There is a dog that barks, and not a normal bark, a crazy rabid bark, the incessant noise kept all of us up. Kathrine at some point murmured, "Does anyone have a long range rifle?" Her southern twang gave it a more humorous twist which had us all laughing... we were thinking more along the lines of a muzzle, or just put him in the house... haha. The bird, oh man, the bird. Holy crow can that thing sing. Or i guess its more of a hackling repetitious squawking as soon as the dog is done... Gah. Its never ending really. But very funny at the same time.
So i guess that's all for now, i am really enjoying myself, homesick at the same time. I will write again after Fez since they don't have wireless internet
Ciao
