Hello again
So Friday is where i left off in the last entry... That morning we went to the orphanage for the morning as usual, but what was unusual was the heat. It was so inexplicably hot after days of tolerable weather. We took care of the babies and after that I was asked to help load laundry and then hang it out to dry. After that afternoon, or should i say during it, I became completely grateful to a drying machine. I will never complain about folding whites again. Going up and down three flights of stairs repeatedly to get loads of washed clothes to bring to the roof to be hung was extremely tiring. After you feel like your legs will give out, you then have to hang the clothes under the incessant rays of the sun on wire strings. Even with a towel wrapped over your head, the sun still burns the top of your head and cheeks. I have new appreciation for the women who do this day in and out. We are only there for about five hours, and they are there all day and night. In the heat, changing crying babies, feeding all of them, putting them down for a nap, doing laundry, drying it, folding it... I never truly knew what hard work was. And it is simpled down a lot with the volunteers there, the bottle feeding and diaper changing goes much faster, but with just the two nurses on for the whole day with 30 newborns (and that only being one small room in the huge building) i can't imagine how they do it and still smile all day. I love to see Zizu with his wry smiles and Riyade who just began to smile each day.
During that time at the orphanage, i started to feel faint and had to sit outside, i mostly thought it was the due to the heat, which only gave me more respect for the women there, but the way i have been feeling im not so sure.
That afternoon once we ate lunch, we boarded a train to Fes. It was a three hour ride but with good music the trip went pretty fast. Our riad that night was very beautiful, a little hot, but a really nice place. We went out for dinner that night and to sleep early because we had a tour the next morning. Our tour was from 7am to 1pm and if you have read margie's blog i will have to agree, the smells were awful. She was really sick that morning so it didnt help her, but we went to the tannery where they dye wool, and it is a cool process but i could not tolerate the smell there. It felt weak of me but i had to leave the building and go back out onto the streets. After our tour we stopped at a little place where they make carpets which was very nice, and everyone felt better that we got to get out of the sun for a while. The carpets and blankets were beautiful! Margie and I bought blankets made of cactus fibers and they're all shiny and pretty, i can't wait to put it in my room. After some more walking and lunch we went back to the riad to relax. That night Chelsea and i started getting stomach aches and thought we caught what margie had. So instead of a tour the next morning, the three of us got an earlier train back to Rabat. We all slept most of the day and i started feeling better until last night Chelsea and I both started vomiting. Today we skipped the orphanage and are gaining our strength back. We are hoping it's just a little bug going around and will pass soon...
So Fes was interesting, but i would much prefer it when it is not so hot outside. This week is back to the orphanage, and possibly the Sahara desert this weekend if we are feeling better.
I will post all of my pictures once i am feeling up to it.
Miss everyone <3
